TissueDB/Tissues/Cornea
Cornea is the clear, avascular anterior structure of the eye composed of five distinct layers: epithelium, Bowman's layer, stroma, Descemet's membrane, and endothelium.[1]
A three-dimensional bench substitute for corneal stroma has been described: primary human corneal fibroblasts from healthy donors co-cultured with SH-SY5Y neurons, a model its authors state "mirrors the basic anatomical and physiological nature of the corneal tissue in vivo".[2]
The endothelium is the layer a simulator must protect. Measured in rabbits, phacoemulsification with an unshielded phaco tip lost 28.08 ± 5.21% of endothelial cells one day after surgery, against 3.50 ± 1.43% when a 100 µm shape-memory poly(glycerol dodecanedioate) shield was placed in the anterior chamber; endothelial cell density at seven days was 1674 ± 285/mm² against 2561 ± 554/mm².[3]
