TissueDB/Materials/Surgical Mask

Surgical masks—including the mask body and elastic ties—represent lightweight fabric layers, flexible strips, or narrow band-like structures. Mask components can be repurposed to simulate connective bands, linear anatomical features, or attachment elements within larger simulation builds.
Tissues
| Tissue | Visual | Tactile | Simulator | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mesoappendix | Open Appendectomy Simulator (Matthews) | Folded scrub-cap material wrapped around red yarn forms the mesoappendix; also the surgical-mask tie portion represents the tenia coli. |
Troubleshooting
- Primary tissue simulation — masks are structural/anchoring materials only. Clinical consequence: Trainees may develop incorrect expectations about tissue properties.
- Suturing practice — mask material doesn't hold sutures well. Use silicone or felt for suture training.
- Procedures requiring tissue properties — use appropriate tissue analogues for realistic tactile feedback.
