Alginate is a natural polysaccharide extracted from brown seaweed (Phaeophyceae), including Laminaria hyperborea and Macrocystis pyrifera.[1] It is sold as a powder that dissolves in water and sets into a gel when a calcium salt is added — a reaction driven by ions rather than by heat, so no cooking or curing step is needed. Calcium chloride is the most frequently used cross-linking agent.[1] The stiffness of the finished gel is tunable: cross-linked alginate gels span roughly 1–100 kPa, set by the concentration of the alginate and of the calcium ions.[2] It is biocompatible, low in toxicity and relatively cheap,[1] and as a food additive it carries no numerical safety limit.[3]

Troubleshooting

  • Do not rush the set. Calcium chloride is the usual cross-linker but it gels fast, and fast gelation produces uneven, poorly controlled cross-linking.[1] Gels that set more slowly show better structural uniformity and a higher stiffness.[2] Speed is a drawback here, not a selling point.
  • Dehydration and mould. Alginate phantoms are susceptible to drying out and to mould growth, so they need protective measures in storage.[6]
  • In ultrasound phantoms it is usually a minor ingredient, not the base. Where alginate appears in a published ultrasound phantom recipe it is at about 2%, alongside gelatin or agar, rather than as the bulk material.[6]
