Olives (green or black) are used in medical simulation to represent palpable nodules and masses within tissue phantoms. When embedded in agar or gelatin matrices, olives appear as hyperechoic structures on ultrasound, providing targets for fine needle aspiration training and nodule localisation.
Tissues
| Tissue | Visual | Tactile | Simulator | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Thyroid | Yes | Yes | Pitted green olives embedded in agar create hyperechoic inclusions for thyroid nodule localisation and FNA training. | |
| Breast Lesions | Yes | Yes | Olives embedded at varying depths in agar simulate palpable breast masses for biopsy training. | |
| Lymph node | Yes | Partial | Small pitted olives simulate lymph node targets at varying depths. |
