Monofilament is thread drawn as a single strand, as against a multifilament (braided) thread of several strands. A monofilament thread meets less resistance as it passes through tissue, and gives micro-organisms less surface to hold on to, than a multifilament thread; a braided thread has the greater surface area and the higher bacterial adhesion index of the two.[1] This page was formerly titled Monofilament Polymer.

In TissueDB monofilament reaches the trainee as a suture. It is a consumable used on the model, not a material that stands in for a tissue, so this page carries no tissues table. Construction (monofilament or braided), material and USP gauge are recorded thread by thread and build by build on Suture.

Monofilament thread is bought sterile and pre-packaged, usually mounted on a needle, and is single-use per pass — the same purchase and disposal pattern as the rest of the Suture class. TissueDB records one build that calls for monofilament by that name: the Hanssen hernia model, in the table below.

A published suturing-model study gives a measured figure for what a monofilament thread does to a training substrate. Working with a U.S.P. 3-0 non-absorbable monofilament suture (Meril Endo Surgery Private Limited, Gujarat, India) on an artificial-skin model, the force needed to tear the model rose with the distance of the stitch from the incision edge: an average of 86.11 N at 1 mm, 120.43 N at 5 mm and 136.79 N at 7 mm.[2] Those numbers describe that model, not human skin: the same paper puts the highest published tear resistance of human cadaveric skin at 211.13 N.[2]

Troubleshooting

  • Knots can work loose. In a systematic review of sutures used in oral surgery, the synthetic monofilament materials showed a tendency to be untied easily.[1] Where knot security matters, count the throws rather than assume the knot holds.
  • It is not a tissue simulant. Monofilament stands in for no tissue. A build that needs a thread-like tissue surrogate — a vessel, a nerve, a tendon — takes it from the material recorded for that tissue, not from here.
