Starting a home vegetable garden

From Appropedia

A home vegetable garden can supply fresh produce for much of the year with modest space and effort. This guide summarises the practical basics for beginners.

Choosing a site

[edit | edit source]

Most vegetables need at least six hours of direct sunlight per day. Pick a level spot with good drainage, sheltered from strong wind. If space is limited, containers, raised beds, or a sunny balcony all work well.

Preparing the soil

[edit | edit source]

Healthy soil is the foundation of a productive garden:

  • Test the soil pH; most vegetables prefer a slightly acidic to neutral range (6.0–7.0).
  • Dig in 5–10 cm of compost or well-rotted manure to improve structure and fertility.
  • Avoid working the soil when it is waterlogged, which damages its structure.

Planning what to plant

[edit | edit source]

Start with easy, reliable crops such as lettuce, radishes, beans, courgettes, and tomatoes. Check a planting calendar for your region so seeds go in after the last frost. Succession sowing — planting small batches every few weeks — extends the harvest.

Watering

[edit | edit source]

Water deeply and less often rather than little and often, encouraging deep roots. Morning watering reduces disease. Mulching with straw or wood chips keeps moisture in and weeds down.

Managing pests

[edit | edit source]

Inspect plants regularly. Hand-pick larger pests, encourage beneficial insects with flowering companion plants, and use barriers such as netting against birds and cabbage moths. Healthy plants resist pests best.

Harvesting

[edit | edit source]

Pick vegetables at peak ripeness for the best flavour, and harvest little and often — this encourages many crops, such as beans, courgettes, and tomatoes, to keep producing.
