School Maker Faires as a Method for Activating Local Innovation Ecosystems

From Appropedia

Conducting a School Maker Faire is a method to activate creativity and collaboration within schools. By creating a space where pstudents build, test, learn, and share, the approach turns schools into hubs of open innovation as opposed to classroom-based learning.

The concept of School Maker Faires originates from the broader movement by the Make Community through initiatives such as Maker Faire, which began in 2006 as a platform for makers. Over time, this method was adapted for educational institutions. In Ukraine, this idea was taken up by the Ukrainian Maker Association, which translated and expanded the original methodology into a practical guide tailored to local needs within the framework of "Tolocar".

Making as an Educational Practice

[edit | edit source]

The defining characteristic of a School Maker Faire is that it is organized around participation rather than performance. Students typically present projects individually or in teams, ranging from simple handmade objects to complex technical prototypes. The focus on the process rsupports learning through doing, reflecting, and sharing. The act of explaining a project to others reinforces understanding, while exposure to different ideas and approaches expands perspectives.

In practice, the method is structured around a few key elements that together create the overall experience:

  • Public exhibition of projects. making student work visible and creating a sense of ownership
  • Interactive workshops , encouraging the faire visitors to try new tools, often guided by students or local makers.
  • Involvement of a various stakeholders, like teachers, parents, local organizations, and makerspaces
  • Flexible and accessible infrastructure repurposing school buildings and classrooms

Organizing a Maker Faire requires coordination and careful planning, ensuring inclusivity and organizing follow-up activities or structures.
