H2S 測試用於測試飲用水的糞便污染。該測試使用常見的實驗室化學品，並通過在 H2S 試紙條上添加特定量的“開水”和普通液體洗滌劑來進行。在低熱烘箱中乾燥後，收集測試水並在暗室中儲存三天。如果樣品中含有產生硫化氫的生物體，紙張和水會變黑，並且通常會產生難聞的氣味。
