About Me

My name is Carolan Raleigh-Halsing. I am currently an undergraduate student and Humboldt State University studying Studio Art and Anthropology.

Interests in Appropriate Technology

Although at this point in my life I have not had much experience with appropriate technology, I feel like I've been exploring the principles behind it for some time. Being newly introduced to appropriate technology, my curiosity has me interested in many aspects. Some of these include large scale food production and home gardening, natural paint and building, transforming "trash" into useful materials, and waste management. What excites me most however is that appropriate technology principles can be applied to almost anything. Perhaps the most interesting part of this for me is how appropriate technology can help strengthen and re-establish community by revealing bonds between each person and between people and their environment.

Experience in Appropriate Technology

In the past I worked on a team to bring worm bins and supplementary curriculum to a Freshwater Elementary School classroom. This was done through a program at Arcata High School called CEDAR Academy. I've worked a very small amount with light clay straw and earthen plaster. I've done a small amount of gardening and landscaping. I've worked quiet a bit with "trash" art and crafts. I have experience with natural crafting such as impermanent shelter construction, fire making, and cordage.

I am currently working with a partner on the CCAT Remediation Zone Project.
