Abstract

The purpose of this project is to create and build a rainwater catchment system for collection, storage, and transportation of water.

Background

During the fall semester of the year 2016, a group of students formed a team in the Engineering 215 - Introduction to design class at Humboldt State University. The team, The Sacred Consulting, committed to the building of a rainwater catchment system for the sanctuary, a non-profit corporation in Arcata, CA. The purpose of the system was to collect the rainwater that traveled down the downspout and serve a better use for it.

Problem statement and criteria

Use sortable table.

Criteria

Criteria Importance Constraints
Sustainability 9 Lowest embedded energy for each item in the system.
Cost 8 less than $400
Usefulness 8 provide at least 25% of the water for the garden and other outdoor uses.
Maintenance 8 Require less than 1hr maintenance per week.
Aesthetics 7 look as good or better than the surrounding structures.
Accessibility 5 Must not block pathway. Area must still be usable.
Sizing 4 Water storage must match the volume of the water coming into the system.

Description of final project

Photos and descriptions. Use gallery.

Include a how to use and maintain section. See the how to template below.
