Background and Mission

Laurel Tree Charter School is a Kindergarten through 12th grade school focused on "creating the education we want for our children." The Laurel Tree Learning Center is located 4555 Valley West Blvd in Arcata, CA.

Mission: Laurel Tree's Mission is to "create a sustainable model of education which provides all students with accessible curriculum, based on college preparatory standards, while developing life and social skills in a mixed age setting."


The Fall 2012 semester of ENGR215 Introduction to Design is working with Laurel Tree Charter School to design and build green educational infrastructure and apparatuses that supports K-12 education at their Arcata, CA location.

Potential projects:

  • Low embedded energy, natural, beautiful way to cook pizza, e.g., cobb oven
  • Apparatus that uses surprise to teach Newton’s laws for high school
  • Low embedded energy, natural, beautiful bench for primary students
  • Apparatus that uses surprise to teach series versus parallel wiring for 7th-8th
  • Apparatus that teaches work and machines for 7th-8th
  • Visually monitoring the electrical energy use at the school
  • Human powered blender for K-12
  • Primary school garden to kitchen infrastructure
