Sustainability Education

Hello there,

In the past year I have been studying sustainability at Sierra Nevada College on Lake Tahoe. This topic is so broad and can pertain to almost anything. Appropedia has helped furhter my understanding of what efforts are going on in the world towards a sustainable future and, supported my search for answers. Above all it has motivated me to do something. Promted by my teacher to also do something for my Alternative energy class my first idea was to instal solar panels on public/private Schools in my community. Yes, this was quite a goal given the legistics. It's an idea in progress but there is alot of " hoops" to hop through and people to convince of the benefits befor it can become tangible. In effort to be pro-active my second idea was all about keeping it simple. So I made a solar charger for my cell phone out of a solar panel and copper wire.

While all that was an experience one thing that I remain passionate about is teaching sustainability in primary and seconday education. The movement in higher education for sustainability with sustainable creation, curriculum, and implementation is the catales to bettering humanity. I feel that the message of sustainability is vital to teach to younger generations as means of teaching problem solving and support for these current efforts. This is apart of my motivation for my degree and becoming a teacher. Why should this sustainable effort only appear in higher education? Those that are educated and want to be educators have a responsibility to give back. There is a good book called Education for Sustianability by John huckel and Stephen Sterling that addresses this very thing. another awesome web sight to check out : http://www.sustainableinsight.com.au/

Hi Sharhesa - great to have you here, and thanks for sharing your story. I'd like to ask a favor: do you mind if we share your story about Appropedia (the first paragraph) at Appropedia:Stories? You can copy it across if you like, or I can do it.

Minor thing: You might want to move or copy your story above to your user page: User:Sharhesa. That's for profiles, and people can leave messages here, like this one. But no sweat - it all works out in the end..

Hope you continue to have a good experience here and find that Appropedia keeps getting better - we're all working on that! Let me know if you have any question or comments. --Chriswaterguy 23:06, 6 December 2011 (PST)

Hi Sharhesa,

Welcome to the Appropedia wiki. Please make yourself at home! If you need a general wiki-tutorial, see the main help page (or the more in-depth one on WikiEducator).

Check your preferences and be sure you verify your email address and turn on email notification if you'd like it -- you can find out when your talk page, or any page on your watchlist, is modified. You may want to upload a photo or information about yourself to your userpage (which is at User:Sharhesa).

If you have a particular interest or project in mind, go ahead and start it! If you have questions or suggestions, the best place to leave them is at our community discussion page, which we call the Village pump - you should get a fast response. Or, feel free to leave me a note on my talk page if you have further questions, need help finding your way around, have a cool idea for a project, or just want to chat.

Glad to have you here!
