Open-Island is an ongoing project of the German NGO "Makers For Humanity" and partners. It was inspired by German artist Joy Lohmann and developed through a series of open-workshops and cooperations worldwide. From the first floating installation "future-raft" for the EXPO2000 world exhibition in Hanover, the floats werde developed into an modular open-source construction system, known as "Open-Island. The first construction system was released 2015 at the MakerFaire Ahmedabad/India and simultaneously on the river Spree in Berlin. An upgraded hexagonal system was released 2018 at the MakerFaire Berlin. After implementing the floats in various climate zones, for different purposes on lakes, ponds and rivers, Open-Island was presented at the art-fair documenta-fifeteen in Kassel/Germany and the World Climate Conference COP27 in Sharm Al Sheikh/Egypt, 2023.

It won the international Social-Art-Award 2021 and is presented in the cinema movie "Träum weiter" from Valentin Thurn. Based on these concepts, the city of Hanover developed their flagship project for waterbased culture, which was realized by the Makers For Humanity with their self-built catamaran "ZuKunst", which serves as a floating cultural platform on the Cities rivers.

In 2026, artist Joy Lohmann startet the next project level on the backwaters in Kerala/India, where an interdisciplinar and international collective continuously develops and builds a floating university for artistic research, intercultural learning and the dissemination of appropriate low-tech solutions for productive floating islands and climate resiliance.
