Maria Fernanda Tapia M.D. is a Bolivian plastic and reconstructive surgeon. During her residency she presented projects concerning the outcomes of microsurgical reconstruction related to social security affiliation in Colombia and migraine surgery. She worked as chief residents for 3 years having the opportunity to grow in leadership skills, surgical technical competence, and integral treatment by interdepartmental linking.

Coming from The Plurinational State of Bolivia she acknowledges the gaps in health systems and barriers for cleft care in low and middle-income countries. As an Operation Smile Global Surgery Fellow she works supporting hospital assessments and strategy plans to strengthen health systems in Latin America and the Caribbean, while being involved in research projects on cleft surgery outcomes.

She intends to continue her education in Pediatric Reconstructive Surgery and implement her knowledge to offer sustainable results in the strengthening of health systems and education in Bolivia and the neighboring countries.
