Bio[edit | edit source]

Hello; I am Gabriel Fugman. I'm currently a sophomore Computer Science (BS) major at Principia College. I am an Eagle Scout, a recipient of the Bronze Medal Congressional Award, and graduated high school from the State of Wisconsin. I have always enjoyed learning about technology, and look forward to learning more about 3D technologies.

The Open Source Movement[edit | edit source]

Open Source is a great way of spreading ideas. In this class, we are utilizing both open source hardware and software.

The usefulness of open source is that it allows the spread of ideas. Thomas Edison, the inventor possibly most famous for his sheer number of patents (over 1,000 in the United States alone), once said "The value of an idea lies in the using of it." Though the patent process is perhaps the antithesis of the idea of open source (indeed, Edison himself expressed frustration over the limits of the patent system; in the phonograph business, he was once blocked by his own patent!), the statement rings true and holds the value of open source: ideas.

The rapid spread and improvement of ideas will surely lead to a rapid spread and improvement of products and living standards.

I think learning about the open source process will also have an impact on my thinking and professional activities at some point in the future; this seems inevitable. As such, learning about some of it now is great!
