I am an educator and  consider myself a “Modern Appropriate Technologist.”  I am primarily interested in “human-scale” technologies that can be maintained by individuals or a community.  To me, this is an important part of the sustainability movement as it empowers people to realize that their choices and actions matter. Examples are small-scale renewable energy systems, waste-to-resource, and agricultural technologies that improve production and resilience.

As a modern AT practitioner, I strive to temper modern screen-based life with activities that root me in purpose and sense of place.  I love gardening and am passionate about food production and preservation.  I have been fermenting vegetables (kimchi) and making kombucha for 20 years.  I love composting and building soil, making biochar, and tending our backyard flock of laying hens and powering my home with renewable energy.  I am aware of energy and material use and strive to be a “conscious consumer.”  I believe that human society is rapidly transforming through web-based  peer-to-peer learning that allows powerful ideas to travel at light speed.  I also love playing traditional fiddle music and actively participate in our vibrant Appalachian culture by playing music in jams as well as for community dances in the region.
