Template:TissueDB Tissue Layout

From Appropedia
Template documentationedit documentation

Overview

[edit source]

{{TissueDB Tissue Layout}} creates TissueDB Tissues pages for anatomical tissue types (skin, muscle, fascia, bone, blood vessels, connective tissue, organ tissues, and bodily fluids). It is part of the TissueDB project.

The layout template controls section ordering and headings. Content sections can use standalone section sub-templates ({{TissueDB Tissue Materials Table}}, {{TissueDB Tissue Simulation Requirements}}, etc.) or accept direct content.

references is a real, declared parameter of this Layout. It defaults to <references />, so the reference list renders correctly whether or not a page passes it.

Parameter Description Source
references The reference list for the page. Optional. Defaults to <references />. Pass | references = <references /> to keep the page out of the hidden tracking category described below. Convention

Why a page might pass it even though the default is identical. MediaWiki's Cite extension populates the hidden category Category:Pages with references but no references tag by scanning the page's own wikitext, before templates are expanded. A tag that comes from a template body — including this template's default — is invisible to that scan. So a page carrying <ref> tags but not passing this parameter renders perfectly and still appears in that category. Passing the literal tag is what removes it. An empty | references = does not work; the literal tag must be the value.

Both choices are valid and neither is a defect. Material pages generally pass it (38 of 100, per goal G-106). Tissue and Structure pages generally do not, and goal G-111 verified that their listing in the category is a false positive: each renders exactly one reference list with zero cite errors.

Do not delete this parameter from a page that has it. In May 2026 an editor removed it from TissueDB/Materials/Plastic Film with the summary "not a Material Layout param; dropped by template". That was true at the time — the parameter was undeclared and discarded. It is now declared, so removing it silently returns the page to the tracking category.

History (goal G-117). Until 20 July 2026 this parameter was undeclared on the Material, Tissue and Structure Layouts: the templates emitted <references /> from their own body and threw any passed value away. That made the same construct required on Material pages and forbidden on Tissue pages. Declaring it with the tag as its default removed the contradiction without changing any page's rendering — A/B verified on three cases (passes and cited, omits and cited, omits and uncited): byte-identical output.

References

[edit source]

Any tissue page that contains a <ref> tag must also carry | references = <references /> inside the Layout call.

This is not a template parameter. The Layout does not declare {{{references}}} and never transcludes the value — it already emits == References == and <references /> unconditionally, so the reference list renders correctly whether or not the page passes anything.

It is still required, because MediaWiki's Cite extension decides the hidden tracking category Category:Pages with references but no references tag by scanning the page's own wikitext before templates are expanded. A tag emitted by a template does not satisfy it, so a template cannot clear this category on a page's behalf. The literal text has to appear in the page source, and passing it as an inert references parameter is how TissueDB does that. An empty | references = does not work — the literal tag must be the value.

Measured 19 July 2026: 21 of the 79 tissue pages carrying <ref> tags were sitting in that tracking category for exactly this reason. Readers were never shown a broken page — the list rendered fine on all of them — but the category is how the wiki surfaces citation problems, so leaving pages in it makes a real signal useless.

The identical rule applies to Template:TissueDB Material Layout and Template:TissueDB Structure Layout.

Content Rules

[edit source]
  • No emoji section headers. SC-0319-01 REJECTED.
  • Visual/Tactile columns use only: Yes, Partial, No. No rating scales (AP-0308-01).
  • Section "Materials" not "Materials Quick-Pick" (DM-35).
  • Section "Things to Look Out For" not "Avoid Antiskills" per canonical spec.
  • No License Plate on Tissues pages. License Plate is Materials-only.
  • All antiskill content must be source-traced (AP-0307-05, SIM-GATE-14).
  • No internal codes on published pages (AP-0314-04).
  • Metric-first format on all measurements.
  • {{Page data}} is called at page level, NOT inside the layout template (Layer 0 principle).
  • The references parameter is optional. It defaults to <references />; passing it also clears the Cite tracking category. See the References section.

Placement

[edit source]

The Tissue Layout is called directly in the page source. {{Synonym data}} and {{Page data}} are placed at page level after the Layout template closes.

Technical Notes

[edit source]
  • The template renders {{TissueDB tissue notice}} at the top of every Tissues page (Layer 1).
  • {{Page data}} is NOT inside the layout template — it is placed at page level (Layer 0 principle).
  • Collapsible sections (At a Glance, Background) use mw-collapsible MediaWiki classes.
  • The template automatically adds categories: TissueDB, Tissues.
  • All tables inside section sub-templates use HTML (SC-0311-01), not wikitext tables.
  • No | pipe escaping anywhere (SC-0311-02).

Creates TissueDB Tissue pages for anatomical tissue types. Enforces canonical section order, references section sub-templates for structured content. Part of the TissueDB Composable Template Architecture.
