This module teaches how to safely place a peripheral IV catheter in settings like an ambulance, clinic, emergency room, hospital ward, or operating room.
| Required Skills | They must know the basics of personal protection (use of PPE) aseptic technique sharps handling taking patient history performing a targeted physical exam and patient consent. Ideally is facile with IM injections or equivalent and understands the basics of fluid management however for teaching the skill these are not prerequisites |

| Training Environment | This can be practiced and performed in the lowest level of care environment including pre-hospital trauma in the community. It requires no resources beyond the materials needed to place the IV the sterile IV fluids to administer. |
What You Will Learn
[edit | edit source]In this module, you will learn how to make decisions about when IV access is appropriate and how to manage the procedure safely. You will review indications and contraindications, prepare the necessary equipment, choose the right site and catheter, and carry out post-procedure care, including recognizing complications and completing documentation.
The lesson includes written materials, videos, and clinical scenarios. Your understanding will be assessed through multiple-choice questions and case-based evaluations, including situations where IV access is not recommended.
