Solar orientation is an important factor in ecological design. Elements such as buildings, plants and active and passive solar systems are usually situated in order to maximize their solar exposure. Generally, the south receives the most solar exposure in the Northern Hemisphere, and the north in the Southern Hemisphere. Other factors will impact exposure, such as longitude, local climate, landscape, and existing structures.
