I'm a longtime lover of appropriate technology. I discovered the concepts in 1995 during my first year of college at Evergreen in Olympia, Washington. There, I adopted a faltering student organization about to be left stranded by graduating seniors. At the time it was called Washington House of Appropriate Technology. The group was inspired by and aspired to create a demonstration home much like [http://www.humboldt.edu/~ccat/ CCAT] at Humboldt State University. Eager to create a thriving resource for the students and greater community, I retired the old name (which I though had a somewhat flaky acronym) and re energized the organization under a new name, Students at Evergreen for Ecological Design (SEED). [http://academic.evergreen.edu/groups/seed/ SEED] became a networking hub providing a reference library, eco-design business directory, and engaged new students in campus activities, eco demonstrations, local eco-design tours and trips to conferences.

Feeling like I needed a more technical education than the Liberal Arts offered at Evergreen, I enrolled in the Environmental Engineering Department at Humboldt State University in Arcata, California. After a couple years of engineering I became enchanted with the Applied Mathematics program to which I completed my degree in.

Having the opportunity to contribute some technical administration work to Appropedia and watching this site grow so significantly in both popularity and utility from it's fairly recent inception, has been rewarding and inspiring. It reminds me of the hopes I had for SEED, but is so much greater and far-reaching than anything I could have imagined at that time.

Currently, as Appropedia takes it's next steps into an even larger arena, I have taken a step back and started focusing on a career in sustainable lighting design. I want to simultaneously decrease the ecological footprint while increasing the aesthetic value of our built environments. Working with light appeals to an artistic sense developed through my explorations in photography. If you have any interesting projects, please don't hesitate to contact me.
