Abstract

Solar Lighting Systems are lighting aids which are popularized as off-grid lighting systems. Solar Lighting Systems(SLS) are generally a composite of solar panel, battery, charge controller and the LED luminary. The are numerous manufacturers who specialize in one component (fragmented manufacturing), the companies selling the product integrate these components and distribute them. The solar modules utilize solar radiation to charge batteries which are generally Lead Acid, Lithium Ion, Lithium Ferro-Phosphate, Nickel metal hydride or ones having similar power density, weight, life span. Charge controllers regulates the flow of energy from the module to the batteries. LED bulbs illuminate the work/living space or pathway using the stored energy. SLS may be portable, stationary, single function (provides only illumination) or multifunction (provides illumination and ability to charge mobile phones).

Categories of SLS

Single Function

These devices only provide illumination and have embedded necessary equipment to do so.

Multifunction devices

Apart from providing light, mobile phones can also be charged using this device. The ability to charge mobile phone makes them yet more acceptable as mobiles are very popular in Africa.

Integrated PV modules

The PV modules required for the recharging of batteries are integrated on to the device itself. An area on the top of the device may be used to mount the module. Most devices have one module and their capacity ranges from 1.6 W - 5 W. These are portable and are preferred.

Separated PV module

These systems are generally larger so portability may not be one of their features.
