Retrofit - making modifications in an existing structure in a house without major construction or design changes.
Things to do to Conserve Energy in the House
- Caulk and weather-strip around all openings and cracks
- Insulate (including floors over unheated spaces
- Insulate hot water pipes; insulate water-heating unit
- Add storm windows and doors (consider using plastic)
- Install insulated shades, panels, or draperies on all windows
- Ventilate attic and crawl space
- Conduct general repairs to reduce air infiltration
- Install clock thermostat on furnace
- Tune-up furnace and water heater annually
- Set water-heater thermostat at 120 F
- Insulate furnace ducts and heat supply lines
- Replace shower heads with water-saving type
- Build a vestibule around exterior doors
- Replace incandescent lighting with fluorescent lights
- Consider task lighting
- Redesign landscaping; add foliage to block or divert winds
- Paint interior walls with light, warm colors
- Provide exterior air sources for furnace and/or fireplace
- Install glass doors on fireplace or install air-tight stove in fireplace opening
- Install energy-saving appliances
