Summary
Schematic of a wood gas stove based on http://www.backpackinglight.com/cgi-bin/backpackinglight/forums/thread_display.html?forum_thread_id=18867 . Permission pending There are 2 versions of a wood gas stove shown:
- The first one is a simpler version where
- the air enters trough the hole & air inlet and wood gas/air outlet have seperate piping. The air enters unobstructed under the grating and is transformed to smoke. The firebox has no top, but smoke remains in the stove and is driven downwards and trough the charcoal as the wood gas flowing out (& and igniting) forms a barrier to the smoke. There are inlet/outlets under the grating, yet the smoke will choose the outlet (which lies under additional charcoal; the inlet is unobstructed), as the inlet allready has outflowing air (and thus provides a greater obstruction). Wood gas and inflowing air exchange heat variations with each other and so the wood gas cools and condenses, making it more potent. The wood gas flows up and then comes up above the fire, where it ignites.
- The second version is almost identical in operation but differs in that (first part of) inlet/outlet pipes are not side by side, but instead at 90° opposing to each other. The top of the firebox is also closed and the outlet pipe starts up higher, improving the circulation of the smoke downwards. Also, no extra charcoal is needed to be only on the outgoing pipes.
