Intro to Mass Communication (JMC 116) is a course taught through the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication at [http://www.humboldt.edu Cal Poly Humboldt] by instructor [[User:JessieMisha|Jessie M. Cretser-Hartenstein]].
This course covers:

* Survey of media outlets and different forms of media 
* The relationship between mass media and society
* Corporate ownership, industries, and technologies
* Media ethics
* The ways in which media affect our lives
* How to become more responsible media consumers and creators 

==Appropedia Assignment==
The purpose of this assignment is to better understand "new media" technologies in mass communication processes and to explore the relationship between "new media" and society. In completing this service-learning assignment you will assist in fulfilling the mission of HSU ("Humboldt State University will be the campus of choice for individuals who seek above all else to improve the human condition and our environment… We will be renowned for social and environmental responsibility and action.") by employing your journalistic skills for the greater good and publishing your own work on an international forum.  The platform we will be using for this assignment is appropedia.org, a locally founded non-profit organization with global reach. 

You will:
* Work with a group of 2-3 people
* Choose a topic that interests your group.  The topic must be original, as well as relevant and applicable to [[Appropedia:Mission|Appropedia’s mission]]. Your topic could be a specific project, a profile of a relevant organization, an overview of a city/region that excels in some area of sustainable development or green living, a profile of a city/region that has a specific issue relating to sustainability, etc. (see [[#Topics|topics]] below for more information and examples)
* Research this topic and compose a 700-1000 word wiki article  
* Create user profiles and post your article to www.appropedia.org (see [[#Instructions|instructions]] below)
* Make your page appear palatable and appealing with proper headings, photos, layout, etc. Be sure to caption your images and only use those that you have permission to publish (see [[Help:Images]] for info on uploading images)
* Reference all sources properly with links (see [[Help:Footnotes]] for help on special wiki citation format)
