The solar lighting CCAT project will be done on the Campus Center for Appropriate Technology grounds.  We will be working with the Ian Kelmartin, a co-director, and Julian Quick, the project manager. We will be working on the work-shed and the lighting issue. The lights are very dim and need to be brighter. We will look at all the connections, how the battery is flowing, how the solar panel’s positioning is affecting the energy inflow and how well the lights are powering themselves. There are eight lights hung inside connected to a battery, then the rest is the solar connection. CCAT employees want a way to use the shed at night as it gets dark early at certain times of the year, and it’s important to be able to access the tools at night when needed with light better support.  We will be working on our project from this day forward to March 10th, when we hope to have good results.

CCAT (Campus Center for Appropriate Technology) is an appropriate technology demonstration house on the Humboldt State University campus in Arcata, California. Student staff and volunteers work weekly at CCAT to keep it running smoothly. The Greenshed is a building where the workers store tools and work on small projects. The Greenshed solar panel powers a solar lighting system that workers can use to light the shed at night. The solar lighting system was installed in early 2013. There are eight lights powered by the panel that hang inside the shed. CCAT workers would like to use the shed at night, especially when it gets dark early in the day.

Problem statement

The objective of this project is to: -Create better lighting in the CCAT tool shed -Find the best location for the solar panel to intake it's maximum -Replace and fix any poorly functioning or broken equipment
