English: A sawn section of a dead, woody, basal trunk of Leycesteria formosa (family Caprifoliaceae), (diameter circa 3cm) sanded to polish it smooth. Various filters have been applied to the image to highlight the structures - both radial and circumferential - of the vascular tissues that make up the wood. Note also the small central void formerly occupied by pith (now rotted away). The image should be of some interest, given that this species is not often associated with the production of much truly woody tissue. Although a shrub, L. formosa produces top growth consisting mainly of fistular, bamboo-like stems. The only truly woody tissue is to be found in the short, basal trunks of the shrub, which are clad in rather warty, greyish-brown bark, and are best observed in large mature specimens of the plant.
