Description

Deidre's Vertical Garden is a project that consists of a modular indoor and outdoor planter with multiple vertical levels. This type of design saves space, water and is maintained by an automatic irrigation pump that works with sunlight through solar panels.

Currently, due to the little space for construction in the urban areas of the country, buildings with apartments and condominiums have been built, eliminating green spaces in homes. With our model, it is hoped that people will have the option to add a space of nature, reduce development costs and increase their well-being.

Problem

El Salvador is experiencing a great change in the way of building homes, because it is seeking to optimize spaces with the construction of vertical apartments, corporate buildings and shopping centers. The Salvadoran Chamber of the construction industry reflected that for the year 2019 in the country there were about 76 apartment construction projects.

In addition, it has been proven that around 441 kilograms of Co2 are polluted for every square meter of building constructed, which has a great impact on air quality and according to the WHO, poor quality could cause more air pollution throughout the world. of 6.5 million deaths a year.

A common characteristic of these constructions is that they do not have enough space to incorporate nature into their homes, offices or public spaces, and with the increase in these buildings, natural spaces are becoming less and less. For this reason, our vertical garden is a solution to renew and include green spaces that bring life and contribute to air purification.

Innovation proposal

What were the invention(s) originally trying to solve?

This project was created to give people living in the city the idea of building a green space with sustainable materials. With the benefits of a vertical garden such as healthy food, water reuse and use of light. This impacts some Visser systems such as ecological, human and knowledge.

Why does it have the potential to be applied in your local context?

In El Salvador there is a trend to increase urbanization and construction in green areas. Therefore, our model provides people in urban areas with an option to reduce the cost of living in the city, become environmentally aware and increase their well-being for the smooth functioning of society.

Who could benefit from it in the context of those who develop this business model?

It could benefit the people of the urbanization that represents 61.7% of the Salvadoran population, focusing on helping and raising awareness among people who work in buildings and apartments.

Do I need to develop anything to implement this project? (Clues: a sustainable business model, a test project, a group of interested people)

The lack of awareness of people or building owners towards a better environment limits good implementation. Likewise, the lack of interest by the government in formulating policies that promote these practices and promote projects of this type that would actually benefit the space of many inhabitants and the environment in which they live.

Services and activities

The service is based on the sale of the necessary supplies for the construction of a vertical garden, this will include instructions for assembling it and different examples of gardens so that the client can choose the most appropriate one for their space. In addition, a manual will be integrated that highlights the different benefits of implementing a vertical garden in your spaces, videos for the installation of components that require greater care, such as the solar panel or the structure.

Finally, the service is expected to implement a community through social networks such as Instagram made up of people committed to the environment and who are interested in the setting and decoration of indoor and outdoor spaces. With this network, users are expected to share experiences and advice on the construction of the vertical garden, as well as its benefits and uses.

This last element of the budget will tell us if the model generates value for the workers and inhabitants of the urban areas of El Salador. This project will be funded with a total of US$ 10.3 K, which is broken down below:

Conclusions and recommendations

  • Do you think the project is innovative? Because?

The project aims to bring green areas (along with all their benefits) to locations with high urban density; places where it is very difficult to conserve vegetation, either due to space or suitable resources. Vertical gardens represent an innovative way to distribute resources, improve your environment and optimize space (elements that today are increasingly scarce and tight). We will bring the benefits of feeling in nature to the city.

  • How can it generate disruption and in what areas or markets?

Vertical gardens have an impact on 3 main systems:

  • Ecological: purifies the air in urban spaces and reduces the ambient temperature of its surroundings. In short, it improves living conditions in the city.
  • Knowledge: make people aware of caring for the environment. There is no longer an excuse for not having space for a home garden or orchard. Promotes a self-sustaining culture.
  • Human: being in contact with the flora of vertical gardens creates a feeling of well-being and increases productivity.
  • If it were to be carried out, what impact could it generate?

If they were to be implemented in El Salvador, vertical gardens could be placed in countless condominiums and offices in the country's urban areas. It would contribute to creating a healthier environment for the inhabitants. These types of gardens multiply the benefits of a soil garden and are more economical to maintain thanks to the solar-powered hose system.
