Appropedia:Newsletter
From Appropedia
- Note: This is an old page, and some may be out of date. Now (Nov 2008) we're looking at reviving it, and will compile specific content for the next newsletter at Appropedia:Newsletter/2008-11.
It is planned to begin sending out newsletters about Appropedia.
Some early ideas follow. (We actually might just do a single newsletter type, to start with).
- One of the first newsletters (an initial priority) is the Appropedia Info Request Newsletter, sent to people who may be knowledgeable in development, sustainability and/or science and engineering, including those who are not regular contributors to Appropedia.
- If we could get an article on economic methods of bringing internet access to remote areas, that would be awesome. --(david.reber left this but I can“t figure how to write a tilde character on this latin american keyboard)
- Later there might be a highlight of recent content (feel free to begin putting one together! E.g. at Appropedia Highlights Newsletter)

[edit] What package?
These are just ideas - the main thing is to get it happening, and perfect the process later ("Worse is better"). We want:
- collaborative - as open as possible (though the wiki will be used for at least part of it - e.g. jotting ideas)
- good UX (user experience) pretty, easy layout
- easy subscription management
Options
- Our Drupal site makes sense, using http://forum.appropedia.org/admin/content/newsletters/types (note the Drupal site is not active apart from the donations page.)
- Is there a WordPress plugin?
- Can we do it collaboratively - openly, even? Wiki page for ideas, anyway.
- How does it work? (I can't make it do anything - Chriswaterguy)
- On the wiki
- Easy collaboration, easy archiving on the wiki.
- Not the best layout features, but passable.
- Still need subscription management, and a sending method that allows the formatted content to be pasted and sent.
- Other...?
[edit] Images
Images help communicate better - however they are not essential, if it means delaying the first newsletters.
One image per story? Specific to the project, or a person, or a concept. Note Stephen Collins' effective and engaging presentations (I saw one at BarCampSydney3 - amazing --Chriswaterguy 20:25, 10 April 2008 (PDT)).
License: must be free images i.e. CC (not with the ND or NC clause), GFDL or public domain.
[edit] Sourcing images
Wikipedia:Project:Public domain image resources #Search Engines
The following are not suitable:
- Google's Advanced Image Search has no license option.
- Picasaweb has no license tags?
[edit] Content ideas
See newsletter stuff at Students Without Borders San Francisco State University
[edit] New Appropedia content
First edition can have content of any age - subsequent editions can focus on new content and articles newly rated as Good Articles or better. See Appropedia:Newest pages. Lead with the most attention grabbing, but include the most weighty.
Suggestions:
[edit] Special newsletter content
- interviews with or profiles of users (these might start as blog posts - Chriswaterguy can help)
- Vinay
- Geraldo
- Steve (highlight our health work)
