I started with a number of guidelines in terms of what to consider and came up with probably a similar list to what I imagine many of you are already aiming for.

Criteria

initial sketch of small quantity water redirection trough, water wheel, and other possible components

Summarized in the following are loose goals and hard limits (among others):

Cost

As cheap as possible or free, which includes

Can't require extremely technical/ unavailable skills
Can't require more time/ intense labor than a typical small family can supply
Prefer using scrap/ waste, or reuseables

Limitations

Fastidiously avoid

Adding to pollution, or continuing to use polluting materials in a way where they are still seeping, offgassing, or otherwise not being contained or remediated
Minimizing the impact of harvesting any natural materials
