Hi TanyaSchade,

Welcome to the Appropedia wiki. Please make yourself at home! If you need a general wiki-tutorial, see the main help page (or the more in-depth one on WikiEducator).

Check your preferences and be sure you verify your email address and turn on email notification if you'd like it -- you can find out when your talk page, or any page on your watchlist, is modified. You may want to upload a photo or information about yourself to your userpage (which is at https://www.appropedia.org/User:TanyaSchade).

If you have a particular interest or project in mind, go ahead and start it! If you have questions or suggestions, the best place to leave them is at the Village pump - you should get a fast response. Or, feel free to leave me a note on my talk page if you have further questions, need help finding your way around, have a cool idea for a project, or just want to chat.

Glad to have you here!

Tanya - I figured I'd have a look and see what I'd eventually be editing...nice choice for favorite piece of clothing.

Project[edit source]

Really nice project -- great idea.

The only part that needs improvement is to expand this section:

In producing PER, initially a mixture of acetic tri butyl citrate and liquid-phased stabilizer is made. A second mixture of powder-like poly vinyl chloride, filling agent, light stabilizer uvasorb and fireproof agent is prepared, and then the two complete mixtures are combined. Once combined, the mixture becomes a cream-like finished product which is

then baked at 170°C and becomes useable polymer environmental-friendly resin...

How do we do this exactly. Does PER contain PVC? If so how much less? The filling agents, light stabilizers and fire retardants can also be carcinogenic, tetragenic, etc....what are they how is the processing work?

Emily's Suggestions[edit source]

Normal 0 false false false EN-CA X-NONE X-NONE

Bio-based polymers

· Aren’t petroleum based polymers technically biologically based, made from the broken down bodies of sea creatures given lots of time and pressure

Concern has been placed in its wide use as it has a great environmental impact and contains both toxins and carcinogens

· There is concern over its wide use…

In many, more flexible PVC products, additives become another concern

· Additives are a concern in products where flexibility is a desired feature of the PVC product

· Phalates have been banned

· Are phalates placticizers?

Alarm is a particular concern in applications where burning or exposure to sunshine occurs as this often causes harmful gas emissions such as carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, hydrogen chloride and occasionally phosphene gas[2].

  • How are things toxic? Route of exposure is important. Think BPA in water bottles, its water soluble and toxic when injested so that’s clearly a bad application, but maybe BPA is ok in say my laptop casing which I traditionally don’t injest

Polymer environmentally-friendly resin (PER) has become a popular alternative to PVC as it is environmentally-friendly, as indicated in the name, and toxin and carcinogen free.

· Polymer environmentally friendly resin is quickly becoming an environmentally friendly, toxin and carcinogen free popular alternative to PVC.

· Note…you contradict yourself in the next sentence saying it isn’t widely used

· The last sentence in this paragraph is akward…reword.

Why PER

· Nice use of Wikipedia! US Environmental protection agency may be excessive

· Lead into the air as dust – again route of exposure. Is lead ok to breath? Maybe this is ok for outdoor furniture but has a big impact on indoor air quality

Carcinogens

· As well as in residents

· Can you find academic journals that suggest the same things about PVC? Your source is an environmental childrens group citing green peace…who may be a little biased

This is just a general thing: if your reference is for the whole paragraph it should go outside of the period.

Recycling and biodegradability

· PVC’s provide debatably more negative environmental impacts for their worth when recycling. Than?? Make it a strong sentence. Take out debatably. They do or they don’t.

· Just curious, does the manufacturing process to make them originally release more or less of those same harmful gases?

PER and PVC Production

The production of PVC requires fewer processing steps than the production of PER, however the additional processing steps required for PER produce a far more environmentally friendly option

· You’ve got a messed up reference in this paragraph… Use <> instead

· Do the increased dollars also prevent people from taking the extra steps in processing

· Tanya, I don’t get how adding more pvc in a different form and more additives (usually fire retarding things aren’t so environmentally friendly) make the polymer better

Benefits of PER

  • In the previous paragraph you stated that you add more stuff, you contradict yourself in saying it has few additives
  • How does it not produce the same things when you burn it? Does the extra processing step change the chemical make up such that regular combustion doesn’t happen (ie CO2 released) If so, is there an extension here to carbon based fuels?
  • Where emissions from PVC production are great, PER has little to no harmful emissions even when burned – What do you mean here?

Material Efficiency

  • This requires some rewording. Watch that you aren’t contradicting yourself, saying its more efficient then less efficient
  • Could you consider the embodied energy right till end of life – maybe you could get some useful work out of breaking down PER, or you have to do less work to recycle it?

Recycling

  • You could link to the appropedia polymer recycling page
  • Minimizing raw material use
  • PVC is unfavorable as a recyclable material and thus is more of less one time use if environmental impact is to be taken into account. à PVC is not easily recycled
  • Like I said before, how are their less additives?
  • Should a switch to PER occur, as a far more recyclable it can be recycled a number of times before additive content it too large for the material to be useful
  • What’s the energy difference in new materials vs recycling?

Overall

Nice work Tanya on a challenging subject, clearly there isn’t a lot of research out there on the topic…you’re number 1 in google!! Try to avoid being really wordy, you say indicated a lot when it isn’t necessary. As for content try to figure out what happens chemically when you add more pvc and a fire retardant that somehow makes it all environmentally friendly. The yogi’s need you!
