Lower priority tech tasks[edit source]

  • Add del.icio.us and other social bookmarking link to the front page (there is an extension for this as well) --Lonny 10:07, 8 October 2006 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Interesting, possibly difficult, Wish List[edit source]

  • Add del.icio.us and other social bookmarking links to all pages using CSS (there is an extension that may work better, allowing a user to put in a template call to show the links). See http://malektips.com/xpwam0006.html --Lonny 10:07, 8 October 2006 (UTC)Reply[reply]
DiggLicious.com might be of interest - combines digg & del.icio.us in one site. --Singkong2005 talk 03:55, 9 October 2006 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • Automatically (or with a bot or maybe just a template call) display the original contributor, and maybe other contributors, at the bottom of pages. See http://www.wikihow.com/Live-a-Long-Life (ignore the BS advice on that page, and just skip right to the bottom for an idea of what I am suggesting). --Lonny 10:07, 8 October 2006 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • Very small user photos in comment tags with six ~'s. Or maybe just a suggest tagline format that shows a small photo. See the tagline of Singkong2005 for some ideas --Lonny 10:18, 8 October 2006 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Use of images is discouraged in Wikipedia due to the load on servers - we might want to think twice about this practice for the same reason. --Singkong2005 talk 03:55, 9 October 2006 (UTC)Reply[reply]
When I first saw this idea, it seemed kind of gimmicky, then I thought what the heck. Singkong notes the issues from the server side; I think there is also an issue on the user side if you're in Indonesia with a slow link :-). You can avoid user pages with photos, but you may still want to spend a fair bit of time on Talk pages. --Curtbeckmann 06:20, 9 October 2006 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I think that the social part of this endeavor should not be overlooked, especially given the success of social networking sites. On Appropedia, the people who add the content are, in some cases, paramount. The pages themselves are critical, and obviously the content of Appropedia, but the people and the interactions are what make it alive. GoodSignal, please look into both server and download issues involved with many very, very small photos or icons on a page. Thank you --Lonny 18:18, 9 October 2006 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Definitely the social aspect is important - having a photo on the user page is a great idea, and the standard wiki function of signatures linking to our user page helps to keep track of who's who. I find that being on a wiki for a while, I recognize the usernames of active people... distinctive images would definitely help that recognition, but if it's a problem for bandwidth and server load, then I wouldn't worry too much. --Singkong2005 talk 19:50, 9 October 2006 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • New Users and Pages listed on the front page. --Lonny 10:23, 8 October 2006 (UTC)Reply[reply]
This is specifically on the front page, and not in the navigation bar? Either way, I guess these would be links to pages that don't currently exist, and so the request is for development of the page? --Curtbeckmann 18:53, 8 October 2006 (UTC)Reply[reply]
This would be an automated section that has links to new users and pages. Think MySpace. Does that make more sense? --68.121.165.139 19:03, 8 October 2006 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • Most viewed, edited by the most users and most linked to from the outside, pages of the day, week, month, etc. on the front page --Lonny 10:23, 8 October 2006 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • Is there an extension to easily add a google gadget to a page. For instance, <googlecalc> would put in a google calculator?

"To do" stuff[edit source]

Should the material on this page be moved to Appropedia:To do? It seems like a lot of it is for other users as well as GoodSignal. --Singkong2005 talk 06:49, 9 October 2006 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Currently Goodsignal is our only tech admin with access to the server besides me. Therefore I am putting some very specific requests here. Eventually there will be a tech admin page, but that is unneccesary currently. --Lonny
Fair enough - I know not to expect to be able to solve the problems on this page then (but I'll add suggestions if appropriate). --Singkong2005 · talk 07:49, 18 October 2006 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Enable Special:Import[edit source]

Hi Gabe, We're all getting excited about importing a ton of stuff from WikiGreen. To do that, we need to have Special:Import enabled. Lonny pointed me to you to request the change, which seems to be buried in LocalSettings or similar. I've looked at MediaWiki Help:Import (where it mentions that this is disabled by default) and Help:User_rights but can sort it out completely. In Help:User_rights there is a section called "Tree" that mentions two settings called Import and ImportUpload, but says nothing else. Elsewhere, under defaults, it shows these both as defaulting to "true" for sysops... If they are true, then those are not the right switches (cuz I don't see Special:Import on the special page), but perhaps they aren't actually set to true for our system.

Anyway, I've begun the poking, but I'm hardly an expert, so I leave it in your capable hands. It occurs to me that I didn't attempt to go directly to Special:Import, perhaps that will work, or maybe it's at the very bottom of the Special page. Let's both look. --CurtB 08:44, 5 January 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]

OKAY! Nevermind! It was already enabled at the bottom of the Special page... I will try some experiments later today and call for help if needed. Sorry for the unnecessary message. --CurtB 08:46, 5 January 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]

updateArticleCount[edit source]

Hi Gabe. The article count (both the total pages, and the legitimate article count) on the Special:Statistics page is way off as a result of the imports. From what I can tell from my searching, the counts can be fixed by a php script that may already be part of the MediaWiki package, or may need to be downloaded: "updateArticleCount.php" is the critter. As far as I understand it should correct the number of articles. Not sure about the total page count...

So, basically, I'm asking if you could run that when you get a chance. It's not urgent. And since I'm still porting text pages over, it might make sense to wait if it's hard to run. If it's easy, then running it multiple times is not a problem, and it might be good to see if it does what's expected... Thanks! --CurtB 11:51, 6 January 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]
