Tiny houses can have a tiny ecological footprint, and are an example of simple living and affordable housing. With housing costs continuing to rise in some markets, a tiny house can offer home ownership without a 30-year mortgage.
 ESW-Northwestern tiny house
At Northwestern University (Illinois, USA), a team of students from Engineers for a Sustainable World (ESW) designed and built a tiny house, 128 square feet in size (approx 13 square meters) and off-the-grid, as an exercise in minimal environmental footprint of an individual. It has solar energy and water collection systems. Construction was expected to be complete in late 2011.
