Simple restoration of a rusty lump hammer bought in a job lot of old tools. A page showing the process.

1
Getting rid of rust

Angle grinder, 40 grit flapper wheel, and a portable 4" vice with soft jaws. Goodbye rust.

2
Re-wedging

Filling any holes with hardwood wedge offcuts. Always best to add a ring wedge or two. No one likes a loose hammer head.

3
Paint job

Paint all the metal except the striking face.

4
Finishing

Sand off any paint (new or historic) and re-oil the wood. I just used a Danish oil rag I had lying around in a jar.
