Dura mater (pachymeninx) is the tough, fibrous outermost of the three meningeal layers that enclose the brain and spinal cord. In the spine it forms the dural sac around the spinal cord and nerve roots and contains the cerebrospinal fluid; during spinal surgery it is opened and then closed with fine sutures (dural closure) to prevent a cerebrospinal-fluid leak.
