The term retrofit refers to making modifications in an existing structure in a house without major construction or design changes. Retrofitting ones home for energy efficiency and bring significant decreases in both heating and cooling bills.

Things to do to Conserve Energy in the House

All of the following ideas will not only conserve energy but also save you money over the life cycle of the product. Some ideas such as temperature set backs will save money with no investment - others such as CFLs will cost a modest amount of money up front (e.g. $5) but will save you a considerable amount over the life cycle (e.g. >$30 for CFLs).

• House insulation (including floors over unheated spaces)
• Caulk and weather-strip around all openings and cracks
• Water heaters: Turn down water heater temperature -- Set water-heater thermostat at 120 F ; Insulate hot water pipes ; insulate water-heating unit  ; install heat traps on water heater
• Add storm windows and doors (consider using plastic)
• Install insulated shades, panels, or draperies on all windows - window treatments
• Ventilate attic and crawl space
• Conduct general repairs to reduce air infiltration
• Furnace: Tune-up furnace and water heater annually; Insulate furnace ducts and heat supply lines; Install clock thermostat on furnace (turn down furnace when not needed - set back at night and when away)
• Replace shower heads with water-saving type
• Build a vestibule around exterior doors
• Lighting: Replace incandescent lighting with fluorescent lights such as CFLs or LEDs; Consider task lighting
• Redesign landscaping; add foliage to block or divert winds
• Paint interior walls with light, warm colors
• Provide exterior air sources for furnace and/or fireplace
• Install glass doors on fireplace or install air-tight stove in fireplace opening
