Snaffles, or more commonly referred to bits, are the metal pieces that riders use to give commands to their mount. For this particular page, reindeer are the intended animal to be used here, however there is no reason why a correctly sized bit cannot be used by another species. This design is the first step toward a completely modular snaffle set for both horses and reindeer. Currently reindeer husbandry in rural parts of Russia and Finland use any material that they can get their hands on to create these snaffles. This project will allow for customizable bits to be created based on the temperament of the animal.
| Material | Amount | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| PLA Plastic | ~16g | ~$0.37 (@ $23 per kg) |
| Plastic Epoxy [Threadless design] | ~2ml | ~$0.40 (@ $5 per 25 ml) |
| Sand paper (3M 120 Grit) [OPTIONAL] | 1 sheet | ~$0.75 (@ $15 per 20 sheets) |
The plastic epoxy can be replaced by any type of adhesive that bonds plastic together strongly.
The sand paper can be replaced by any abrasive material lying around, I just happened to have sandpaper on hand.
- Scad file for snaffle
- STL file for snaffle bit threadless
- STL file for snaffle cheek extension threadless
- STL file for snaffle bit threaded
- STL file for snaffle cheek threaded
- STL file for a threaded nut and bolt, used to test if the printer can handle threads
- STL file for a peg and a cap, used for adhesion testing

Material Costs for one straight bit 4" snaffle

|---|---|---|
| PLA Plastic | ~16g | ~$0.37 (@ $23 per kg) |

Design Costs
| Threadless | Threadless w/Sandpaper | Threads | Threads w/Sandpaper |
|---|---|---|---|
| $0.77 | $1.52 | $0.37 | $1.12 |
Using the most expensive design of threadless with sandpaper the savings are at 95%, using a threaded design with no sandpaper pushes those savings to just under 99%
| Commercial Equivalent | Commercial Price | Money Saved | Savings Percent |
|---|---|---|---|
| Straight Bar | $29.99 | $28.47 | 95% |
As stated before, the goal for this project is for a modular design of snaffles. To that end, here is a to-do list of features that I plan to add to OpenSCAD Snaffle file:
Additional Goals outside of modeling:
To those that wish to contribute to this project, please always design a threaded variant and a non-threaded variant.
Special thanks goes out to Dan Kirshner for his ISO-standard thread library for OpenSCAD.
And to Anna Johnson, for putting up with all my questions about bits and horses.
