Preparing this page to host a directory of information and case studies about transportation solutions that are proven to work in ecovillages and sustainable communities

• Appropedia Sustainable Transport page.

Human power

• Walking, running - how this is supported in communities
  • Kauai (Hawaii) pedestrians and multi-modal transportation initiative. https://ulupono.com/newsletter-listing/july-2024/kaua-i-works-to-create-a-walkable-community/
• For water
  • Canoe, Kayak, Small sailing,
  • Human powered water transport (rowing, pedal-powered boats like kayaks and mini-pontoon boats)
  • Buckminster Fuller design for a push-oar (somewhat like an umbrella).
• Bicycles, tricycles (human powered)
• Animal transport (e.g. horse-powered)
• Railroad "hand pumper" cars.

Electric and solar electric

• Solar Powered Transport for Last-Mile services in Zimbabwe. /www.bastillepost.com/global/article/4050896-solar-powered-tricycles-revolutionize-rural-transport-in-zimbabwe|https://www.bastillepost.com/global/article/4050896-solar-powered-tricycles-revolutionize-rural-transport-in-zimbabwe
• Electric wagons, utility carts, wheelbarrows, etc.
• Non-fossil fuel transport fuels (bio-fuel alternatives for gases and liquids; green hydrogen).
• Shared mobility services (e.g. lift sharing, car sharing)

Gas and liquid fuel

• Public transport - relationship with communities. Intentional communities integrated with public transportation (e.g. case study from Portland, Oregon, co-housing).
• Water transport
  • Wind powered transport (sailing)
• Electrified transport (bicycles, cars, buses, rail, ferries)
• Roadway and infrastructure systems and techniques.
  • Permeable materials for walking, biking, roadways.
  • "Plastic" roadways case studies.

  • inflatable bags for building culverts.
  • Planning for integrated systems for pedestrians, bikes, and roadways.
  • More specific techniques and systems.
  • Ice and snow melting systems for cold climates.
  • Hot climate solutions.
• Apps and software to coordinate transport
• Solar walkways, pathways, bicycle lanes, roadways.
