The STARS (Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights) - Intrauterine Device (IUD) Insertion module's Cervix and Vaginal Canal (with Augmented Feedback) Simulator will allow nurses, midwives and clinical officers to become confident and competent in maintaining aseptic technique in sounding the uterus, loading the IUD in the sterile package, setting the gauge to the sounded depth, and gently inserting and deploying the IUD as part of copper and hormonal IUD insertion procedures performed in low to middle income countries. The Cervix and Vaginal Canal (with Augmented Feedback) Simulator contains 3 components: (1) Nulliparous Cervix, (2) Parous Cervix, and (3) Vaginal Canal with Augmented Feedback.

Cervix Models

Cervix Dimensions and Appearance

The cervix models match the published dimensions on cervical width and length for nulliparous and primiparous women.^[1] The average cervix width for nulliparous women is 25.51 mm and average cervix length for nulliparous women is 29.18 mm. The average cervix width for primiparous women is 28.18 mm and average cervix length for primiparous women is 31.89 mm.

The cervixes are also designed to simulate the appearance of the os of nulliparous and parous cervixes.^[2]

Nulliparous Cervix

Collect Supplies

You will need the following materials:

Light Pink Clay
Ruler
Pencil or Chopstick

The clay should be a oil-based (stiffer) modelling clay, like Crayola Modelling Clay.

Make a Nulliparous Cervix

Roll pink clay into a cylinder 2.5 cm in diameter and 3 cm long.

Create the Os

Insert a pencil tip or chopstick through the center of the pink clay cylinder to simulate the smooth, rounded os of the nulliparous cervix.

Attach Cervix to Uterus Simulator

Mount the Nulliparous Cervix model on the pegs of the 3D Printed Uterus Simulator.

Parous Cervix

You will need the following materials:

Light Pink Clay
Ruler
Pencil or Chopstick

The clay should be a oil-based (stiffer) modelling clay, like Crayola Modelling Clay.

Make a Parous Cervix

Roll clay into a cylinder 3 cm in diameter and 3 cm long.

Create the Os

Use the tip of the pencil or chopstick to create the "fish mouth" appearance of the wider os of a parous cervix.

Attach Cervix to Uterus Simulator

Mount the Parous Cervix model on the pegs of the 3D Printed Uterus Simulator.

Vaginal Canal with Augmented Feedback

Vaginal Dimensions

The diameter of the opening of a disposable pelvic speculum commonly used in an Ugandan hospital was measured by the Team Lead as 4.5 cm.

The upper range of linear vaginal length is 95.0 mm from the introitus to the cervix.^[3] The Pederson medium speculum is 10.0 cm in length, and is an acceptable fit for many patients.

The vaginal canal is designed to be 4.5 cm in diameter, 14.0 cm in circumference, and 13.0 cm long (10.0 cm + 3.0 cm) to account for the vaginal length and cervix length.^[1]^[3]
