Sandra Cvetanovic

Hi, my name is Sandra Cvetanovic. I am an undergraduate at Michigan Technological University, studying Electrical Engineering with a concentration in Photonics. I am interested in solar technology, particularly solar photonics and the efficiency of photovoltaic cells.

My interest in solar energy reflects my background: I was born in South Africa, one of the sunniest countries in the world, which has recently been suffering from prolonged power outages (known as 'load-shedding'). These power outages have been pulling back the South African economy, costing billions of rand, and have in several cases led to many local struggles, particularly in rural areas during the winter months when locals struggle to warm themselves, or do not have access to light or electric cooking gear such as electric stoves and ovens. Having experienced the impact of power outages, and being interested in harnessing sustainable energy so as to benefit and not inhibit the planet's health, solar energy and technology have drawn my interests.

Research

Currently participating in research on PV plasmonics, seeking to increase efficiency of photovoltaic cells by minimizing reflection and maximizing absorption.
