I am an undergraduate student pursuing a dual degree with a Bachelor of Arts, Honours Business Administration (HBA) and Bachelor of Medical Sciences, Honours in Interdisciplinary Medical Sciences (IMS), at Western University. Under the supervision of Dr. Nicole Haggerty at Ivey Business School and Dr. James Lacefield in the department of Biomedical Engineering at Western University, I will be contributing to addressing the persistent problem of unequal access to healthcare technologies and innovations for individuals living in remote and low-resource settings. I will be composing a scoping review with the objective of identifying, exploring, and mapping literature on select frugal biomedical innovations that received different levels of uptake to validate frameworks regarding the diffusion of innovation in low-resource settings. The review seeks to develop potential solutions to increase the adoption of innovation and to determine what systemic factors affect the degree of diffusion in low-resource areas to address global health issues. It is also expected that the review will inform medical technology firms on how they can set up value creation and value capturing mechanisms to reach new customer segments in remote areas with unprecedented value propositions. My research will utilize interdisciplinary theories to develop the right action plan and training program in design and translation of frugal medical technologies.
