“I haven’t seen Canadian companies fully understand or realize the business benefits of encouraging teams to be part of the open source ecosystem. A lot of American companies have teams that are dedicated to doing open source…whereas Canadian companies for the most part are still in the consumption mode of software…and haven’r realized the need to give back.”
Canada, my home country, has a very strong post-secondary system; world-class Computer Science and Engineering schools, however outside of BioWare and BlackBerry there has not been much traction in STEM corporations, small business’, nor makers in the nation, I believe due in part to organizations such as OSHWA not having a strong enough presence to inform and encourage innovation and open source/hardware from early on and to general masses.
  • After noticing this issue while working in Gaza, Dr. Tarek Loubani, an emergency room physician in Canada and recipient of the 2020 Bassel Khartabil Fellowship, created an open-source design for stethoscopes in 2018 that can be 3D printed for around $3.00 USD.
