Portrait of Oscar René Sayes Sandoval, 49 years old farmer who works in the Santa Rosa community, Municipality of El Porvenir, Ahuachapán. Since 2020 he adopted ASA practices as his own: “I grew up in agriculture with my parents. Since I was seven years old I started working. To take care of the cattle and to work in agriculture. It is the knowledge that I have. Lately it has become more difficult with climate change, because today it is not like before, at least before the winters began in May and ended in October. Today the rains are prolonged and suddenly there are times when it rains a lot ... times when it does not rain so it is another thing that we as farmers have to battle with. We have learned to take care of soil. Because before they taught us that to sow if there was less garbage, the better. Now we have learned that stubble helps a lot to protect the soil. When it rains a lot, it is not washed, and when it stops raining the stubble stores moisture so that the plant lasts longer in the drought. The soil is what feeds me. We farmers live on that. We work with the illusion to get food for ourselves, for the family, to survive. The water we know that if we do not take care of the soil we will have more contaminated and more scarcity. Maybe deeper. That is why it helps to take care of the soil to conserve water. If there is no water there is no life ”. Raíces El Salvador is a comprehensive approach promoted by CRS with Water Smart Agriculture (ASA) practices to restore the agricultural landscape.
