The amount of plastic waste being accumulated on a daily basis is higher than ever, which raises the problem of plastic collection, transportation, and processing. The idea of this project is to make a tool that breaks the plastic down into smaller pieces so as to make it easier for transportation as well as further processing. An ideal outcome of this project would be a compact open source plastic shredder, which can easily be used even at remote places as well as constructed from local materials.

Understanding the market[edit | edit source]

This is where you can describe what already exists, what is needed, etc. You may want to include inline references.[1]

Project goals[edit | edit source]

The overall goal of this project is to come-up with a compact plastic shredder design to shred LDPE, PET bottles, etc. The shredded materials needs to be within a specific dimension range, based on the process requirements of the user.

    • General flow of the design process was discussed however, less emphasis on design calculations and iterations.

    • Detailed design calculations, Alternative blade design implemented.
    • saw-teeth blade used instead of conventional S-shaped ones.
    • Performance evaluation was done on the final machine, The machine tend to be much more efficient in processing HDPE, PVC and PET than LDPE. The highest machine efficiency obtained for LDPE was only 63.45%, Compared to approximately 90% for most other plastics.
    • The efficiency of machine to process LDPE decreased with increase in RPM of the shredder.

    • Detailed and iterative design, sieve implementation and problems with the same are discussed.
    • If the sieve/mesh size is too small the shreds will keep swiveling in the shredder. The distance between blade and sieve needs to be considered as the blade need to push the shreds down the sieve when they are small enough and also to be able to lift the shreds from the sieve/mesh.

    • Tight tolerance between counter blades are important for better cutting action.
    • Temperature of the shredders should be water-cooled to control the temperature and avoid plastic melting and jamming the machine.

    • Vibration and wear analysis of the blade was done and the solution implemented to decrease the same were to increase the blade width and nickle coated blade tips.
