Reducing the digital equipment footprint[edit | edit source]
- Extending devices' liftetime: digital services can do this through providing support to older devices, or by helping users upgrade or tweak their hardware for newer functionality. Examples of this are apps to reuse old smartphones or considering keeping backward compatibility to extend the lifetime of devices as new versions are developed.
- Releasing with open licenses: open hardware refers to devices whose specifications are released to the public, granting them permission to study, change or reproduce it. In many cases individuals with permission to reuse the hardware they own allows them to adapt it or repurpose it for new uses.
