Over the full , although to a smaller degree than\ntraditional energy sources, PV also creates solid waste. This paper examines the potential need for PV\nrecycling policies by analyzing existing recycling protocols for the five major types of commercialized\nPV materials. The amount of recoverable semiconductor material and glass in a 1 m<sup>2</sup> area solar module\nfor the five types of cells is quantified both physically and the profit potential of recycling is determined.\nThe cost of landfill disposal of the whole solar module, including the glass and semiconductor was also\ndetermined for each type of solar module. It was found that the economic motivation to recycle most PV\nmodules is unfavorable without appropriate policies. Results are discussed on the need to regulate for\nappropriate energy and environmental policy in the PV manufacturing industry particularly for PV\ncontaining hazardous materials. The results demonstrate the need to encourage producer responsibility\nnot only in the PV manufacturing sector but also in the entire energy industry.","Page image":"File:Recycling-pv.png","Page is part of":"Category:QAS completed projects and publications","Page keywords":"photovoltaics, recycling, energy policy, solar, PV, producer responsibility, PV manufacturing, solid waste, lifecycle","Page language":"en","Page license":"CC-BY-SA-3.0","Page title":"Producer responsibility and recycling solar photovoltaic modules","Page views":"572","Page year":"Friday, 01-Jan-10 00:00:00 UTC","Project authors":"User:J.M.Pearce, McDonald N.C.","Project coordinates":"44.305413888889, -76.428377777778","Project location":"Kingston, Canada","Project thumb":"https://www.appropedia.org/w/images/thumb/3/31/Recycling-pv.png/330px-Recycling-pv.png","Modification date":"Saturday, 14-Feb-26 12:33:09 UTC"}
