LIBS (Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy) is a form of atomic emission spectroscopy where a low energy but high power density laser pulse is used to ablate a small amount of material and turn it into plasma. When cooling down, the excess energy is emitted as photons with discrete energy states. From this light the elemental composition of the sample can be determined.\n\nAll the .scad and .stl files will be shared as soon as they are printed and tested.\n\nThe design is based on [https://web.archive.org/web/20201124074442/https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:11653 http://web.archive.org/web/20201124074442/https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:11653] and https://www.appropedia.org/Open-source_laser_system_for_polymeric_welding\n\n== Designer ==\n\nLasse Kangas, Aalto University, Department of Civil Engineering\n\n== Project ==\n\n=== Concept ===\n\n<gallery widths=\"200\">\nFile:Frame_v1.1.png|Early stage frame design, front\nFile:Frame_v1.1_2.png|Early stage frame design, back\nFile:concept_z.png|Concept model of the manual z-translator, back\n</gallery>\n\n=== Mechanical Parts ===\n\n* 2 x MakerSlide - 25142-04 1800 mm\n* 1 x MakerSlide - 25142-03 1000 mm\n* 12 x Dual Bearing V-Wheel Kit - 25203-06\n* 3 x Standard Wheel Carriage Plate - 25200-01\n* 5400 mm 45x45 mm aluminium extrusion (Norcan)\n* 6 x Eccentric Spacer - 25195-01\n* Aluminum Spacers - 25312-13\n* Button Head Cap Screw - 25286-05\n* Plastic MXL Pulley - Dual Flange - 25204-02\n* MXL Belting - Open Ended - 25205-01\n\n=== Printable Parts ===\n\n* Laser casing\n* Fiber holder\n* Optics holders\n* Steppermotor mounts\n* 3 x Belt braice to carriage\n\n=== Electronics ===\n\n* Arduino Mega 2560 R3\n* Adafruit Motor/Stepper/Servo Shield for Arduino v2 kit - v2.3\n* SN754410 H-Bridge Motor Driver\n* Stepper motor - NEMA-17 size - 200 steps/rev, 12V 350mA\n* Optical Endstop Light Control Limit Switch for 3D Printer - RED\n* Power Source 5/12V\n\n=== Estimated Costs ===\n\nFrame and sliders:\n\n* 2 x [https://www.inventables.com/technologies/makerslide MakerSlide 1800 mm] = 58€\n* [https://www.inventables.com/technologies/makerslide MakerSlide 1000 mm] = 20€\n* 12 x [https://www.inventables.com/technologies/dual-bearing-v-wheel-kit Dual Bearing V-Wheel Kit] = 53€\n* 3 x [https://www.inventables.com/technologies/standard-wheel-carriage-plate Standard Wheel Carriage Plate] = 19.5€\n* [https://profican.fi/en 5400 mm 45x45 mm aluminium extrusion (Norcan)] = 95€\n* [https://www.inventables.com/technologies/eccentric-spacer 6 x Eccentric Spacer - 25195-01] = $12\n* [https://www.inventables.com/technologies/aluminum-spacers Aluminum Spacers - 25312-13] = $2.99\n* [https://www.inventables.com/technologies/button-head-cap-screw Button Head Cap Screw - 25286-05] = $2.99\n* [https://web.archive.org/web/20160913045647/https://www.inventables.com/technologies/plastic-mxl-pulley-dual-flange Plastic MXL Pulley - Dual Flange - 25204-02] = $5.99\n* [https://web.archive.org/web/20160913045651/https://www.inventables.com/technologies/mxl-belting-open-ended MXL Belting - Open Ended - 25205-01] = $1.99/12 in\n\nElectronics/motors;\n\n* 2 x [https://www.robotshop.com/eu/en/motor-shield-kit-arduino-v23.html Adafruit Motor/Stepper/Servo Shield for Arduino v2 Kit - v2.3] 35.58€\n* [https://www.robotshop.com/eu/en/arduino-mega-2560-microcontroller-rev3.html Arduino Mega 2560 Microcontroller Rev3] 28.50€\n* [https://www.robotshop.com/eu/en/arduino-shield-stacking-headers.html Arduino Shield Stacking Headers] 1.74€\n* 3 x [https://www.sparkfun.com/products/9238] $44.85\n* 2 x [https://www.gearbest.com/3d-printer-parts/pp_413835.html Optical Endstop Light Control Limit Switch for 3D Printer - RED]<br>\n\n{{Page data\n| keywords = 3d printing, Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy, core scanner, drill, aluminum, arduino, marker slide\n| sdg = SDG09 Industry innovation and infrastructure\n| published = 2018\n| organizations = Aalto University\n| license = CC-BY-SA-3.0\n| language = en\n| description = The LIBS Drill Core Scanner is described on Appropedia, outlining its open-source design and how it helps analyze core samples safely and affordably.\n}}\n\n[[Category:3d printing]]"}
