Athena Build Overview

The design borrows heavily from the Most Delta Printer, keeping all of the features that have proven to be effective and adding some new. It has the same build volume but uses metal GT2 pulleys and GT2 timing belt with approximately twice the positioning precision of the MOST Delta. All electronics are tucked away under the build platform and wiring management is improved with the addition of built-in passages and anchor points in idler and motor ends. The design utilizes the improved extruder drive and the MOST Delta's end effector fitted with quick release pneumatic couplers for simplified assembly and easier maintenance. The open top makes for better use of wood and removes a resonator, making the machine quieter and more flexible.
Franklin firmware, while developed for all 3D printers, is a perfect fit for the Athena. It natively supports delta printers with built-in positioning algorithms that calculate delta movements (instead of tricking Cartesian firmwares into doing delta movements as has typically been done). It presents the control interface as a web page, meaning that no software installation is required on the client. Novice builders should be aware that while this design is fairly simple to assemble as compared to historical RepRaps, it is still not trivial. Review the MOST RepRap Primer and familiarize yourself with terminology and methods. Assembly instructions are detailed and include many images. This is a living document so if a step is missing or difficult to understand, please make an attempt to correct it.

- Print media: PLA; ABS with PLA raft; addition of a heated bed will expand media options

- A variety of print controllers can be used; this version uses a Melzi combined with a Beaglebone Green running Franklin firmware

Before You Begin[edit | edit source]
Review the process below and collect all of the tools and consumables you need to begin the build. The list of tools above is not necessarily exhaustive.
Software to download and install[edit | edit source]
Software from github.com should be downloaded as a zip file. The link to download the zip file is located in the lower, right corner of the screen when it first opens. It is a button with a cloud icon and the text 'Download ZIP' on it.
All zip files must be extracted prior to attempting to install the software. If unsure how to unzip files, do a web search that includes the name of the operating system you use. There is almost never a need to install additional software to unzip files since all modern operating systems natively include the ability.
- Download and install a slicer: Cura slicer or slic3r or other. (The designers are better equipped to support Cura as that is what they use.)
Assembly[edit | edit source]
Assembly is organized by functional group. The following guide is prepared for a tandem build. Solo builders complete the build traversing the table by row (i.e. complete all tasks in each row of the build process).
For those participating in workshops, some of the assembly is completed before the workshop. Only those parts of the process highlighted green are required. It's important to get the steps requiring epoxying of parts completed early as the epoxy should be well cured by the time final assembly takes place.

Upgrades[edit | edit source]
Athena is a flexible robot, not just a pretty 3-D printer. With some fairly simple modifications and/or additions of components, it can do much more. All of the following are parametric designs with OpenSCAD. Links to relevant OpenSCAD files are located on the following pages and users are encouraged to take advantage of the parametric nature of the designs to create their own bespoke tools:

|Cylindrical tool mount holds small cylindrical tools and is the simplest of the tool holders, having limited uses.|
|Sprung tool mount holds cylindrical tools in a sprung mount for pen plotting and vinyl cutting, for example.|
|Microscope holder holds USB microscopes, turning Athena into a quite good 3-axis microscope stage.|
|The fixed tool mount permits mounting and swapping of heavy, fixed tools that then work the moving workpiece. The following require the fixed tool mount.|
|Micro mill spindle mount permits attaching a micro mill spindle for small milling projects like PCB prototyping, milling small wood and plastic parts.|
