I want to bring back up this issue brought up by User:Shapoklyak a while ago. We'll begin updating some of our templates to allow for better referencing, having DOI links for some articles and other new capabilities. Perhaps we can discuss this further, since User:Sophivorus is currently working on improving specific parts of Appropedia and this might be a useful project. --Emilio (talk) 16:27, 10 December 2020 (UTC)

::Shapoklyak I usually suggest developing local versions of templates, because Wikipedia templates are generally way more complicated than smaller wikis require. However, in this case, given that Appropedia is fairly academic and favors good referencing, and considering how awfully complicated good referencing is, I agree that updating the local templates from the Wikipedia versions would be the most robust (and maintainable) solution. Also, their development has been mostly backwards-compatible, so I don't expect many references to break here after an update. Hi all! I think you'll all be most happy to see this: Map (I know I was!) The map displays all pages that have their location set via the "location" parameter of the infoboxes. This includes projects, organizations, users, etc. I'll soon create a nice template to generate sub-maps for specific regions or types of pages, for example a map of just organizations, or just users, or just users in California, etc. Until then, I hope you'll enjoy seeing this early version and sharing your thoughts on how to best use this new potential! :::Emilio Good catch! Your report led me to find a deeper issue with the whole map and location system which I was able to fix. The map now displays more pages and more precisely located. However, I haven't been able to fix the particular issue with Amún Shéa and the map you made. It's not because the region isn't recognized, because Amún Shéa displays properly on the world-wide map as well as when I create a world-wide map about organizations only. But when creating a map of organizations in El Salvador, or a general map of El Salvador, Amún Shéa doesn't display, weird! I'll figure it out eventually, but let me know if you notice any other issue that may give me a clue. Cheers! The first would help develop a section (subtitle) of an Appropedia page by including the intro text from a wikipedia article eg Newham#Education for sustainability could have a further subtitle 'Bow Creek Ecology Park'?

:@Philralph Hi, I'm glad you're finding the template useful! Your first request seems quite straightforward. Is this what you mean? Or do you mean creating a template that automatically inserts a subtitle before the Wikipedia excerpt? If so, then I think it's actually better to manually insert the subtitle, because subtitles inserted via templates have trouble with the [edit] button and are confusing when editing via the visual editor. As to your second request, it's a bit more complicated but doable, I'll add it to my task list! Sophivorus (talk) 12:28, 12 January 2021 (UTC)

Hi! really enjoying using the wiki with it's new design. Thanks to those making this happen. Excited to be progressing many developments to Community action pages. Following up on references display[edit source]

For the specific issue that I brought up, the most robust solution would probably be to adopt Wikipedia's templates. However, this would imply changing existing Appropedia pages. It is probably easy to change "accessdate" into "access-date", a bit less easy to detect when "work" should become "website". Shapoklyak (talk) 19:25, 10 December 2020 (UTC)
@Shapoklyak, Emilio: I usually suggest developing local versions of templates, because Wikipedia templates are generally way more complicated than smaller wikis require. Sophivorus (talk) 19:58, 10 December 2020 (UTC)
@Shapoklyak, Sophivorus: In that case, I'll add to Appropedia:Site development as part of our wishlist for implementation (including DOI for academic pages). I think it will be super useful given the number of citations that Appropedia gets every year. —Emilio (talk)

Wikipedia excerpt templates?[edit source]

Hi all and @Sophivorus, I've been experimenting with Template:Wikipedia excerpt and this feels to me like a really useful thing to help us develop location and CAS pages.

It then leads me to wondering if a couple of similar but slightly different templates might be possible?

The first would help develop a section (subtitle) of an Appropedia page by including the intro text from a wikipedia article eg Newham#Education for sustainability could have a further subtitle 'Bow Creek Ecology Park'?

The second would help improve a section (subtitle) of an Appropedia page by including the section (subtitle) text from a wikipedia article? Thanks Philralph (talk) 12:04, 12 January 2021 (UTC)

@Philralph Hi, I'm glad you're finding the template useful!
