Abstract

  1. The quick fastener is what secures the plastic body panels to the frame of the snowmobile. They work by inserting them into the prefabed holes in the plastic, push in and turn it 90 degrees clockwise and the spring pushes back and locks it into place. This device qualifies as an OSAT Project because it was a request made by someone who needed snowmobile parts. This device is a fraction of what it would normally cost if bought from a dealer/shop. If you own a Yamaha 4-stroke snowmobile, you know the need for these quick fasteners.

Bill of Materials

  1. 1.75mm PLA filament

Tools needed for fabrication of the OSAT

  1. MOST Delta RepRap or similar RepRap 3-D printer
  2. Open SCAD
  3. Cura
  4. Exacto Knife

Skills and Knowledge Necessary to Make the OSAT

  1. 3D Printing and 3D Modeling

Technical Specifications and Assembly Instructions

Printing

  1. Set to 40% fill
  2. Print Speed: 40mm/s
  3. It takes 12-15 minutes to print
  4. Clean the grooves with the exact-o knife after printing is finished

RepRap Settings

  1. Run Speed: 35%
  2. Feed Rate: 72%

Common Problems and Solutions

  • Be sure to watch the extruder when printing the grooved end to make sure there is not too much filament coming out of the hot end.
  • Turn the feed rate and run speed down if the extruded filament looks like it is getting bunched up.

Cost savings

  1. 1g of filament per fastener = $0.02 per fastener
  2. Cost from a Yamaha dealer (single fastener, tax not included) = $13.50
    1. $ savings: $13.48
    2. % savings: 99.8%.
