Abstract

Titanium Sun shield is two layers (a primer and topcoat combination) applied over the exterior surface of a shelter. The plastic sheeting used as the shelter exterior has properties that make adhesion difficult, so a primer is used. Among seven varieties of primer tested, XIM (which is oil-based) is the brand chosen for its superior adherence to the plastic. The purpose of applying a topcoat is to protect the plastic from ultraviolet radiation. The topcoat incorporates particles of titanium dioxide, which offer high refractivity, changing the direction of UV light before penetrating below. Additionally, of the various finishes semi-gloss is preferred because it is durable.
